Notch Mountain

Notch Mountain

Notch Mountain (13,237 Ft.) has notoriety mainly because it provides the best view of the Cross located on Mt. Holy Cross.  The trail gains 2500 ft over 5 miles which makes it pretty easy by Colorado standards.

I get a big kick out of Shelters and Chalets built years ago and that still stand throughout all of the Rocky Mountains.  The Notch Mountain Shelter was built in 1924 to accommodate the large number of people making pilgrimages to see Mt. Holy Cross.  The wind was howling, so we definitely made use out of it for our lunch break.

It is easier to make out the cross when there is still snow stuck in the crevaces, but if you look closely you can see it right in the middle of this picture.
