Mt. Sneffels

Mt. Sneffels

We took off on the 5ish hour drive towards Ouray after work. Arriving just after midnight we slept in the back of the Jeep so we could get hit the trail first thing.  Around 5am we made our way towards the upper trailhead.  It's worth noting that you can no longer drive all the way to the TH as the road is closed for resource conservation.

Quick Trail Facts:

  • Total Distance: 4.13 miles RT
  • Trailhead Elevation: ~11,800 Ft.
    • Elevation Gain: ~2,400 Ft.
    • Summit: 14,150 Ft.
  • GPS Route
    • Our Route was iced over so there was some time spent evaluating another approach.

This gully was part of improvised route that we had to make our way up (and worse - back down) to make it to the summit. Unfortunately, weather only permitted us to have about 5 minutes at the top before an uncharacteristically early thunderstorm forced us down.  It was about 7:45 am when the lightning began in the distance which fueled our now brisk decent down the mountain.  "Hurry don't Panic"  was the mantra in my head.  By the time we made it back to the car at 9:15 we were back to clear blue skies.
